The 21st Annual Orange County 4-H Dairy Calf Sale and 4-H Alumni Reunion – An Event for Everyone
One of those events many 4-H’ers remember is the annual Calf Sale and Silent Auction – traditionally held the day before Mother’s Day. This year’s event, scheduled for Saturday, May 7 will be held at the recently opened Cornell Cooperative Extension Orange County Education Center & 4-H Park, near Otisville, NY. The sale includes a chicken BBQ at 6 pm (pre-order required), silent auction, and live dairy cattle sale at 7 pm. There is something for everyone at this event: food, fun, and useful items from the silent auction, and great dairy cattle for both the showman and the commercial dairy producer.
The Calf Sale/Silent Auction serves as a fundraiser for the 4-H Dairy Program to provide educational programing, field trips, and participation in competitions. In the past 2 years, youth from the Orange County 4-H Dairy Program have represented New York State at the national level for various educational contests. “During that same period of time agriculture career exploration by 4-H youth has resulted in 100% of the program’s graduates pursuing agriculture-related careers.” Vanessa Merrill, 4-H Educator, also acknowledge the important contributions local farmers and agricultural businesses have made toward the event and Dairy Program, “We’ve got 25 head of quality dairy cattle and an impressive array of beautiful and practical items for the silent auction for this year. It’s going to be a very enjoyable event, with – literally – something for everyone. Lots of people do their Mother’s Day shopping, right here at the Calf Sale!”
Also happening in conjunction with the sale is a 4-H Alumni reunion. “I don’t know why we’ve never attempted to do this before, because the response has been fantastic,” commented Joanne DeBlock-Becerril, a former member of Orange County 4-H who is now a stay-at-home mom working to bring together other “4-H Alumni” for an informal get-together on May 7. “Social media has been incredibly effective in getting the word out, and reconnecting many friends and families who shared a lot of happy times together in 4-H.”
The Alumni Reunion committee is planning a great selection of games, a farm animal petting zoo, a tractor display, and hay wagon rides around the Park site. “Just bring the kids, and come out for a fun evening,” says Becerril. There is no charge for admission, plenty of parking, and hot dogs and hamburgers available for those who haven’t reserved a Chicken Barbeque dinner. “There’s already going to be a lot of activity, with the silent auction, calf sale, and Chicken Barbeque – so we thought this would be a terrific chance for everyone who’s been a part of Orange County 4-H to see our new Park in action! There’s so much room, and the setting is simply beautiful.” These activities will start at 5:00 pm.
Come and join the fun by bidding on something that would meet your needs and enjoy the camaraderie of the event, as well as supporting a great cause. All proceeds raised from the event benefit the Orange County 4-H Dairy program.
