The Eastern CT Draft Horse Association held its Annual Plow Match and Obstacle Competition on April 23, 2016 at the UConn Lee Farm in Coventry, CT. The plowing judge was Wes Hopkins and the Obstacle judge was Gene Swistowich.
During the plowing competition each teamster was assigned a plot to plow of equal size. The scores achieved were based on several factors including if the plowing was done without help, the straightness of the furrows, the ends or headlands, and how well the cover crop was covered.
The classes in the stone-boat and obstacle events included men’s, ladies’ and juniors in both team and single categories.
The obstacle course was a timed event featuring orange highway cones strategically placed in a field which the teamster had to negotiate using a variety of approaches and maneuvers. Each cone housed a tennis ball and points were deducted if a ball was knocked off and a severe penalty was imposed if a cone was knocked over. Each team was required to follow the same route.
Winner in the men’s team walking plow was Al Cyr and the lady’s walking plow winner was Erica Mrczak. The men’s team sulky was won by Earl Clements and the lady’s winner was Erica Marczak. The winner in the man’s two way sulky was Bryan Clark and again the ladies winner was Erica Marczak. Al Cyr took the honors in the multiple hitch class.
The men’s walking obstacle team winner was Bryan Clark. In the same class for the ladies was Erika Marczak. The men’s walking obstacle single was Dale Nageli and once again Erika Marczak walked away with the ladies’ honors. In the men’s stone-boat team competition Bryan Clark won as did Erica Marczak in the ladies group and in the men’s single stone-boat class Dale Naegeli won as did Erica Marczak in the ladies.
The high point plowing of the day went to Al Cyr. Erica Marczak took the high point obstacle of the day and to no ones surprise she also walked away a teamster of the Day. Congratulations to Erica!
