This past June 13 New England Juniors traveled to the National Holstein Convention in St. Charles, IL. The National Holstein Convention takes place every year in different states around the country. The New England Junior delegation was selected last October at the New
England Holstein Convention where they competed in dairy bowl, jeopardy and public speaking for a spot on the team. Coach Nicole Fletcher held practices once a month at the University of New Hampshire, where the juniors were able to expand their dairy knowledge and prepare for the competitions.
The convention began on Monday, June 22, and ran until Friday, June 27, concluding with the Junior Awards Banquet. Along with competing at the National Convention, juniors also toured Luck-E Holsteins, Lindale & Team Holsteins and GEA Farm Technologies. They were also able to participate in the National Junior Holstein meeting, attend youth mixers, watch the National Holstein sale and attend a family night of jousting and chivalry at Medieval Times. The juniors also loved visiting the “dairy bar” to get their fill of milk products throughout the week.
In the end, the juniors were proud of all they accomplished throughout the week. Some highlights were the Senior Dairy Bowl team, led by captain Madison Stevens, along with Chandler Stevens, Matthew Fletcher and Erin Norris, placing 6th overall. Also, Trevor Clapp of
Massachusetts finished 5th overall in junior dairy jeopardy and the New England banner, made by Leah Caverly of Maine, placed first in the banner contest. The entire week was a great learning experience and a fantastic opportunity for juniors to explore the dairy industry. The juniors are now very excited to attend next year’s convention in Saratoga, NY!
