CALS’ 50th annniversary highlights its work to improve agriculture aroud the globe

LIVERPOOL, NY — With its focus on youth, the future was clearly on the agenda at the New York State Agricultural Society’s 182nd annual meeting and forum Jan. 8-9 at the Holiday Inn near Syracuse.

The keynote speaker on Jan. 9, Dr. Robert Milligan of Dairy Strategies LLC, gave an address titled, “Millennials’ Perspectives on Their Future in Agriculture.” He also joined in a panel discussion with four “millennials,” or college-age people who feel their future is definitely tied to agriculture. With a little planning, a winter farrowing can be just as successful as a warm weather one. Sows’ living and birthing quarters should be top priority: warm, dry accommodations are the key components to the survival rate of sows and their piglets. Much like a human, a pig that gets cold and wet often gets sick. The common cold or even pneumonia is not unheard of and a pregnant sow can be much more vulnerable to the elements. [Read more…]
