Two young girls arrived with their parents and other extended family at the All-American Dairy Show held recently in Harrisburg, PA, and knew they’d be spending a lot of time working hard to prepare cattle for the show. Eight students of Penn State’s Department of Animal Science Advanced Beef Production course traveled to our nation’s capital to speak with industry representatives and meet with legislators and their staff, Sept. 27th- 29th. The intense two-day trip was designed to help students understand the issues within the beef industry and observe the legislative process as they met with congressional delegations to explain the issues.
The 2015 A.C. “Whitie” Thomson Memorial Award was presented to Jason Johnson of Woodstock, VT, during the Supreme Champion Ceremony at World Dairy Expo on Saturday, Oct. 3. The Big E is a major sleight of hand in organizing. During the week, each set of animals are led in, judged, and then moved out so the next set can move in.
In the sheep department over 800 meat sheep were judged from Friday to Tuesday, according to Nancy Miniter who mans the sheep desk. After much pondering and discussion by the judges, the winner of Supreme Champion Ram was Evan Syme of South Windsor, CT, with a Polled Dorset lamb out of the champions of every breed that had won over the last few days.
