Joleanna Dairy hosts Delaware Co. Soil Health and Winter Forage Field Day

Soil health is one of the most important factors that crop-growers face and an educational clinic about soil health and the role that winter forage cover crops can play, was recently presented by Delaware County’s Soil and Water Conservation District, Delaware County’s Cornell Cooperative Extension and Joleanna Dairy Farm in Unadilla, NY.

“We’ve been using cover crops on our farm for several years and have been growing corn using strip-till for the last six years,” said Derek Johnson of Joleanna Farm. “We feel that by doing this we are able to improve our overall soil health and achieve greater yields.” [Read more…]

2014 Massachusetts Envirothon winners announced

CN-RP-2-EnvirothonLEOMINSTER, MA  — A school year of preparation paid off for local teenagers who were rewarded for their knowledge of the environment at the 27th annual Massachusetts Envirothon. They were among 250 high school students from more than 30 Massachusetts communities from Boston to the Berkshires who descended on Sholan Farms in Leominster on Thursday, May 15, 2014 for the outdoor field competition. Thirty mile tractor ride

The world moved at a slower pace as 46 people on tractors rode a 30-mile route along backcountry roads and main thoroughfares of western Massachusetts during the 7th Annual Tractor Ride on May 18. At 12 miles an hour, the convoy drove through the towns of Cummington, Peru, Windsor, Savoy and West Cummington, then back to their starting point at Cummington Fairgrounds for a chicken barbecue.
