The demand for organic corn, soy, and wheat for both feed and food markets is increasing. According to United States Department of Agriculture Economic Research Service’s data, organic corn acreage has increased 24 percent since 2011. Soy has shown a modest three percent increase during this same time. While organic wheat acreage decreased by three percent, overall wheat acreage in the United States also declined during that timeframe. [Read more…]

AUGUSTA, MA — The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry (DACF) recently released its 2015 report on spruce budworm in Maine. Entomologists from the DACF’s Maine Forest Service note a steady rise in the numbers of insects caught in pheromone traps concentrated along the Canadian border. Quebec’s infestation now encompasses 15.6 million acres and has spread south onto the Gaspe Peninsula and toward Maine. The insect’s potential to become an outbreak over vast regions of commercially valuable spruce-fir forests has scientists and public official deeply concerned. An infestation can spread rapidly via moths migrating to new areas. [Read more…]
Members of the Storrs Regional FFA Chapter in Connecticut were one of 43 teams participating in the National FFA Agricultural Tech. and Mech. Systems Career Development Event (CDE). The event was held in conjunction with the 88th National FFA Convention & Expo in Louisville, KY. The team, led by advisor Jim Pomeroy, was awarded a Silver emblem. Members also competed for individual awards with 160 other participants. Patrick Clarke received a Silver emblem, Benjamin Garrison received a Silver, Benjamin Conklin received a Gold emblem, for placing 7th individual overall and received a check for $700 and a free welder and Mitchell Sanchez received a Bronze emblem. Grain farmers gathered recently to attend Penn State University’s Grain Marketing Workshop, in Leesport. The workshop was geared towards grain producers interested in learning more about commodity grain marketing, John Berry, Penn State Extension Ag Marketing Educator, said.
In the C barn during this year’s Equine Affaire, stood a blue roan; just a short while ago, the blue roan had been running wild with other mustangs in a herd out west. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Wild Horse and Burro Adoption Program rounded him up and in April, 13 year old Ashley Retcho of Just a Sport of Color Farm from Pine Bush, NY adopted him from BLM as part of the Extreme Mustang Makeover (EMM) Challenge from a temporary BLM adoption location, Crimson Acres in Orange, MA.
