Manure and the potentially dangerous gasses from manure storage and agitation are one of the inevitable aspects of livestock farming. The combination of working in confined space and a farmer who needs to keep moving can be lethal.

Rob Meinen, Penn State extension in the ag safety program, describes confined space as ‘large enough to enter but with limited or restricted means of entry and exit, and not designed for normal, continual occupancy by a worker.’ [Read more…]

Carroll County “Venturing Crew” team takes top honors at Maryland Envirothon; Harford, Montgomery County students place

CM-RP-1-MD-ENVIROTHON1ANNAPOLIS, MD — A five-member team of students from Carroll County, named ‘Venturing Crew 202’, is the winner of the 25th annual Maryland Envirothon, an outdoor natural resources competition that challenges students to identify and categorize living resources, perform soil surveys and solve other complex natural resource issues. More than 89 challengers from 18 counties across Maryland took part in this year’s competition. Riders keep riding

Sometimes the little girl who always wanted a horse isn’t fortunate to have one until she’s older. The passion for horses never left and she’s finally able to ride, but she’s finding that her body isn’t quite what it was. Or perhaps someone who rode frequently as a youngster had to stop for an extended period of time. Now that they’re back in the saddle as a middle-aged adult, stiff joints make it obvious that years have passed. And some people who rode as youngsters and continued throughout adulthood may notice that movements that once came easily are more restricted and perhaps even painful. [Read more…]
