Christie Administration announces 2015 Outstanding Young Farmer, seeks applications for 2016 honoree

TRENTON, NJ — Henry Richard Byma, a 36-year-old Sussex County dairy, hay and grain farmer, has been chosen as New Jersey’s 2015 Outstanding Young Farmers by the New Jersey State Board of Agriculture. Byma, who farms 680 acres in Wantage, will be presented with his award at the February 2015 New Jersey State Agricultural Convention in Atlantic City.

“Coming from a premier dairy farming family, Henry Byma continues to innovate and improve his farm operation, enacting practices to increase both milk and grain production while being environmentally responsible,” said New Jersey Secretary of Agriculture Douglas H. Fisher. “He is a leader in the agricultural community and will proudly represent New Jersey in the coming year as Outstanding Young Farmer.” [Read more…]

Susquehanna County 4-Hers excel at PA State Junior Dairy Show

CE-MR-2-Susquehanna CountyThirty-five Susquehanna County Dairy 4-Hers recently traveled to the PA Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg to compete at the PA State Junior Dairy Show. Participants qualified for the State Show by exhibiting and receiving a blue ribbon at the District Dairy Show. Susquehanna County was well represented, and did an excellent job competing against other 4-H Dairy members from across the state.

Once again, Susquehanna County was very proud to have three 4-Hers exhibit State Champions. [Read more…]

Horse rescuer among 2014 Empire Farm Days winners

CW-MR-1-Horse rescuerSENECA FALLS — The winners of the 2014 Empire Farm Days competitions and drawings at the farm show held at Rodman Lott and Son Farms in Seneca Falls, NY, include a horse rescuer, a dairy farmer, an organic producer, tots and teens, the NYS FFA President, and noteworthy agricultural environmental stewards.

Marty and Laurie Mosher run Haven of Rest Farm, a horse rescue operation in Owego, NY. Marty, who won the Empire Farm Days Equine Center Show King saddle sponsored by Empire Farm Days, says, “The Equine Center programs are a favorite stop at Empire Farm Days for us. We will definitely use the saddle for trail riding and with the grandkids at horse and pony shows.” [Read more…]

Ortensi Farm and Equestrian Center

Spanning three towns and two counties, Ortensi Farm and Equestrian Center in Central New York is owned by Gregory and Bernie Ortensi, a couple committed to leaving the land healthier than when they began farming it.

The farm’s 500 acres is split between Springfield in Otsego County and the towns of Stark and Warren in Herkimer County. The house and 250 acres are located in Springfield with the remainder of the property split among two other townships. “It’s a unique piece of property,” Bernie said. [Read more…]

Family Day at Raycliff Farm

It was a typical, grey, Central New York day with cloud-dotted skies in late August when people gathered for Family Day at Raycliff Farm. Raycliff Farm is located on Snellsbush Road in eastern Little Falls. Raycliff Farms is a Quarter Horse farm founded in 1964. Judy Mijares and Ray Hutten opened their farm for the 5th year for Family Day at Raycliff Farm. Judy explained that Family Day at Raycliff Farm was sponsored by: the Town of Manheim, Herkimer County Dairy Promotion, Cornell Cooperative Extension, Soil & Water, and the Farm Bureau. She said, “The idea is to give folks an idea about agribusiness, old fashioned fun (bale toss and egg and spoon race), and expose people to farm life.” [Read more…]
