Kallie Jaquay and her horse Andy recently made the 33 hour drive from Hamilton, NY to Rock Springs, WY to represent New York at the High School National Finals Rodeo. To qualify for Nationals, you must be in the top four in the event in your state. There were over 1,700 competitors from 45 states and Canadian provinces, including a team from Australia. A team of 4-H’ers from Centre County represented Pennsylvania at the National 4-H Poultry and Egg Conference held November 18-19 at the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center in Louisville, KY. The team placed second overall in the Poultry Judging Contest, just 1.3 points (out of 4500) behind first place winner Georgia. Pennsylvania was first in the Market Egg Division, second in Production Hens and Oral reasons Division and fourth in the Market Poultry Division.

Nearly 14.3 percent of the total carrot crop acreage in the United States is grown in organic farming systems. “Carrots are a significant organic production vegetable component in U.S. agriculture,” said Micaela Colley, executive director and research education director for the Organic Seed Alliance.
Given the crop’s importance in organic agriculture, carrots are the focus of a nationwide project aimed at addressing critical needs of organic farmers. The collaborative includes researchers from around the country with specialties in multiple disciplines. The group is working together to develop and identify carrot varieties with improved nematode and disease resistance, increased nutritional value and flavor and improved weed competitiveness.
