On Oct. 23 and 24, juniors from all over New England gathered for the 2015 New England Holstein Convention. This year’s convention was held in Massachusetts and based out of the Hotel UMass. Youth attend this convention to qualify to compete at the National Holstein Convention, held every year in June.
Youth competed in many different activities in an effort to qualify for the national convention. Eighteen youth competed in rounds of Dairy Bowl, Dairy Jeopardy and took a written test to try and qualify for spots on the Dairy Bowl teams and in the National Dairy Jeopardy Contest.
The youth chosen for the Junior Dairy Bowl Team include Dan Clapp, Trevor Clapp, Chelsey Patch and Miriam Dugas, with alternate Austin Norris.
The Senior Dairy Bowl Team is Madison Stevens, Maggie Laprise, Maddie Beaudry and Erin Norris, with alternate Alyssa Mullen. Lottie Page, Greg Norris, and Katelyn Poitras were also chosen to compete in the Dairy Jeopardy Contest along with alternates Renee Pendleton, Lily Vaughn and Sydney Bullard.
Six youth also competed in the Prepared Public Speaking Contest; participants were able to choose any topic relating to the dairy industry or the Holstein breed. Trevor Clapp, Maddie Beaudry and Erin Norris were all selected to give their speeches at the national convention. Maggie Laprise also competed in the Young Distinguished Junior Member contest (YDJM). She had to prepare a scrapbook giving information on her farm experience and undergo an interview. Maggie was selected to enter the National YDJM contest.
The juniors also had the opportunity to visit some great farms during their time in Massachusetts. On Friday, they visited Cook Farm, in Hadley, MA to tour the facilities and for a chicken barbecue. On Saturday, the juniors were able to tour Barstow’s Longview Farm, also in Hadley, MA to see their manure digester and new robotic milk system. They also made some stops in Westhampton, MA, to visit Parson’s farm to see their new cheese operation and Mary Montague’s art studio to see her farm oriented paintings.
On Friday night, the youth also had a business meeting to elect new officers and discuss the upcoming year. The new officers include Madison Stevens as president, Maggie Laprise as vice president, Erin Norris as secretary, and Kailey Foster as treasurer. The officers talked about beginning more youth trips and selling apparel as a fundraiser.
